Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation.
Globally, around 8.5% of adults or 422 million aged 18 and over had diabetic in 2014 #1
Nearly 541,600 cases of diabetes in Singapore in year 2015. #2
A chronic disease in which the level of blood sugar (glucose) in the body is high over a prolonged period
The high blood glucose is due to a breakdown in glucose metabolism.
Glucose is a vital source of energy needed by our body - muscles, tissues and organs
Glucose metabolism requires insulin, a hormone produced by the beta cells in the pancreas
Fig. 1 : How insulin works?
The food (carbohydrates and sugar) consumed are digested in our stomach and converted into glucose
When the pancreas detect a rise in the glucose level, in the blood, it produces the hormone, insulin
Insulin moves the glucose into muscle cells, organs and store in the liver (glycogen)
When glucose level in the blood is low, the pancreas will produce another hormone, glucagon, for the liver to release the stored glucose for use as energy by the body cells
No insulin is produced by the pancreas
Causes unknown but associated to damages to the beta cells due to a viral infection or an auto-immune reaction
Usually occur during puberty but also in young adults
Affect about 5 to 10% of all diabetic patients
Requires daily insulin injection
Characterized by insulin resistance and possibly reduced insulin secretion
Primarily due to lifestyle factors: obesity (BMI> 30, high waist to hip ratio), lack of exercise, poor diet and stress – such people typically have “3 highs”
Tend to occur in adults over 40 years old
Makes up about 90% of all diabetic cases
Usually develops slowly (from pre-diabetes) and often overlook
High blood sugar level appearing only during pregnancy
Affects about 3 to 10% of all pregnant women
Due to inadequate insulin secretion or reduced insulin sensitivity
Risks of delivery complications and babies with low blood sugar, growth deformities, etc
Risks of developing into Type 2 diabetes (5-10%) after delivery or later in life
Frequent urination (excess glucose builds up in your blood. Your kidneys are forced to work overtime to filter and absorb the excess sugar), increase thirst, constant feeling hungry & weight loss
Slow or poor healing of wounds, blurred vision & itchy skin,
Fatigue/tired/lethargic
Cardiovascular disease
Nerve, kidney & eye damage and sexual problem
Reduced immune system
Lack of insulin secretion (genetic or drug)
Uncontrolled diet & Obesity
Lack of exercise & Stress
Normal : < 100mg/dL (5.6mmol/L)
Prediabetes : 100-125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L)
Diabetes : >126mg/dL (7 mmol/L)
Diabetes : => 200mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L)
1. Decrease glucose absorbed to the blood stream
(i) Decrease glucose production by liver
Biguanide
Thiazolidinediones
(ii) Decrease absorption by intestine
Alpha-glucosidase inhibitor
2. Increase insulin secretion
(i) Increase insulin secretion by pancrease
Meglitinides
Sulfonylureas
Phenylalanine derivatives Insulin
3. More glucose leave blood system into tissue
(i) Increase glucose uptake by adipose tissues and muscles
Biguanide
Thiazolidinediones
Hormones that replace insulin produced by the body
Lower or not enough blood sugar that due to too much insulin in the blood
Delay emptying of food from the stomach
Lower blood sugar that lead to increase appetite
Excess insulin convert dietary sugar and fat into stored body fat
Excess insulin raises cholesterol production to unhealthy level and make kidneys retain sodium, causing water retention
Take more fiber and less carbohydrate & fats. Choose low or medium glycemic index carbohydrate, e.g. sweet potatoes (Low GI), brown rice (Medium GI) and millet (Low GI)
BMI<25
Reduce smoking; Stress management ; Have sufficient rest

1.Regulate Immune System
Increase immune response for diabetes patients who are more susceptible to getting infection, e.g. result in loss of limb
Prevent auto-immune response to destroy insulin producing cells within pancreas
2. Improve blood circulation
Remove blood fat, e.g. cholesterol & triglyceride, thereby increasing vascular elasticity ; prevent risk of stroke
Prevent nerve, kidney & eye damage
3. Enhance liver function (detoxification)
Eliminate toxin from the liver & able to protect another detoxification organ - kidney.
4. Remove free radicals & anti-oxidation
Protecting & prolong cells life, e.g. pancreas cells and enhance cells renewal
Prof. Zhi-Bin Lin of Beijing Med Uni, published a report on the “Amelioration of diabetes using Polysaccharide Peptide of G. lucidum (GIPS)”
Animal testing – 2 groups of mice, control and the other group fed with Gannoderma Polysaccharides Peptide, GIPS (50mg/kg) for 10 consecutive days, then administer a chemical to stimulate diabetes in them
Summary : GIPS is effective in preventing attack of diabetes and can maintain high insulin level and lower blood glucose. Ganoderma, thus has the potential to prevent diabetes
In the same experiment (as Part A above) by Prof. Zhi-Bin Lin, he examined the pancreas of the mice..
Summary : GIPS protects the pancreas and prolongs the life span of beta-cells (eliminating free radicals) and thus prevents diabetes
In Nov’87, Japanese researcher, Kimura & co, published a report on the hypoglycemic effects of Ganoderma extract on mice with high blood glucose
Animal study – Feed mice with high dose of glucose causing “almost glucose toxic” and then feed with ganoderma hot-water extract
this is a glucose tolerance test
Summary : Ganoderma Polysaccharides are effective in reducing excessive blood glucose and thus able to help control the disorder in blood glucose metabolism
In 2000, a clinical trial was conducted in Taichung Veterans GH, Taiwan, involving 46 patients (divided into 2 groups)with 6 to10 years of medical history.
Clinically research - After 12 weeks, the treated group showed a decrease in their postprandial blood glucose whereas no significant difference were observed in the fasting blood glucose
Summary : Decrease in postprandial blood glucose, which is sometimes difficult to achieve even with medication.
Improves blood flow and circulation, by removing blood fat, like cholesterol and triglyceride, thereby increasing vascular elasticity and risk of stroke
Anti-oxidation and eliminate free radicals, thus, protecting and prolonging cells life and at the same time enhancing cells renewal
Eliminate toxins from the liver and able to protect other organs, like kidneys, reducing incidence of complications

Mr. Lin went for a medical check after discovered bubbles in his urine. Few weeks prior to the checkup, he started feeling tired, sleepy and thirsty.
He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes eventually.
Medical report shown glucose level of 501 mg/dl ( ~28 mmol/L) *normal 100mg/dl (~5.6 mmol/L)
His high glucose condition became Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) which can be life threatening. This happened when your body doesn't have enough insulin to allow blood sugar into your cells for use as energy,
He was hospitalize and required insulin injection few times daily.
He started taking YK Ganoderma and Bee Pollen, 5 capsules each hourly.
His condition improved 2 days later as the fasting sugar level dropped to 200mg/dl.
On 3rd day, his glucose level drop to 140mg/dl a level , which is a level that doctor can discharge him.
Since his condition had improved, he reduced LZ and Bee Pollen dosage to 8 caps each for 3 times a day. As for western medication, he will need to inject 20cc of insulin daily.
After 2 weeks, his medical review reported his glucose level had dropped further. Other tests also reported significant improvement in triglycerides and cholesterol level.
WIth his good progress, Doctor allow him to decide as and when he see fit to reduce the insulin dosage.
After 3 months of insulin injection, his glucose level returned back to normal and in healthy range. He decided to stop the insulin.
As for Yung Kien Ganoderma, he continued with of 12 capsules per day as health maintenance.
In summary, not only his fasting glucose (81mg) and HBa1C (5.5%) had significant improvement, other tests i.e. triglycerides, cholesterol had also improved. He also surprised, as his urine acid also dropped to 6.4 from 9.4 mg/dl.
